Arundel Priory, originally called “The College,” was founded in 1380 as a quadrangle complex with a chapel, living quarters, and service buildings. It flourished for about 150 years until the Dissolution of the Monasteries, when it passed to the Earl of Arundel. After damage during the English Civil War, the site lay in ruins for centuries before being restored by the Duke of Norfolk as a Catholic oratory.
Later, parts became a convent and school run by Servite Sisters until 1960, then a children’s home, and eventually housing for the elderly under the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
The former Oratory was converted in 1977 into the Priory Playhouse by the Arundel Players, a theatre group founded in 1959.
